Many of us remember the days when “Ol Lonely”, the Maytag Repairman, was the icon behind promoting the Maytag washer. As we watched the commercial we all wanted to grow up and have the job of the Maytag repairman that never had to work because the product was so good that it never needed fixed. Although just like any other product the repairman does get called out to do maintenance on these giants in the washing machine industry, the reputation of this machine is undeniably one of the best.
Back in 1893 a businessman by the name of Frederick Maytag founded what was then known as the Maytag Washing Machine Company.
By 1925 they became known as Maytag, Inc.
In 1946 they expanded and started a separate line of ranges and refrigerators.
In 1949 the first automatic washers were built.
During the Korean War, Maytag built parts for the military right along side their washing machine manufacturing.
In 1953 the first automatic dryer was introduced and women everywhere were excited about not having to hang the clothes on the line to dry anymore!
In 1958 they introduced a line of commercial coin slot washers for laundromats.
During the year of my birth, 1966, they introduced the portable dishwasher. The dishwasher has become a must have in today’s fast paced society and nearly every home in America has one.
In 1967, actor Jesse White appeared in the first “Maytag Repairman” TV commercial.
Finally after 76 years, in 1983 Maytag discontinued the production of the wringer washer.
Then in 1987 they added the very popular front-loading commercial washer.
By April of 2006 Whirlpool took over Maytag and continues to manufacture the Maytag product to this day.
Though time has brought about many changes over the years for the Maytag company the one thing that still remains today is the reputation that they have built for more than 120 years. They stand as one of the few brand names that has managed to withstand the test of time and is still in production.
One of the things that makes Maytag stand out is that they are manufactured right here in the United States of America.
As the blogger for this site I have owned several Maytag products. I have their washer, dryer, refrigerator, range and microwave. I have had very few problems over the years and have been very satisfied with the quality and the service that I have received from my Maytag products.
